Materials:
1 oz worsted weight yarn
G hook
Stitch marker
Yarn needle
Plastic bottle (I used a Equate ibruprofen bottle and cut off the top)

Abbreviations:
BLO = back loops only
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
Rnd = round
sc = single crochet

Note: This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of each round, instead place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.

Special stitches:

Single spike st: insert hook 1 row below the row where next st would normally go, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Double spike st: insert hook 2 rows below the row where next st would normally go, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Triple spike st: insert hook 3 rows below the row where next st would normally go, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Spike st group: single spike st, double spike st, triple spike st, double spike st, single spike st.

Case body:

This part of the pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Place a stitch marker in the 1st stitch of each round.

With color A: ch 31

Rnd 1: 2sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 28 ch, 4sc in last ch, now working on unused side of beg ch sc in next 28 ch, 2sc in last ch. (64 sc)

Rnd 2: sc in 1st st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 28 st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 2 st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 28 st, 2sc in next st, sc in last st. (68 sc)

Rnd 3-24: sc in 1st st and around. (68 sc)

Finish off, weave in ends.

Flap:

This part is worked in rows.

With color A: ch 27

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 25 ch. This is the wrong side and bottom. (26 sc)

Row 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st and across. Row 2 is the right side. Finish off A after Row 4. (26 sc)

Row 5: Attach B to Row 4 with a sc in 1st st [with right side facing you on opposite side from where A finished off], sc in next st, single spike st, (spike st group) 4 times, single spike st, sc in last 2 st. (4 sc, 2 single spike st, 4 spike st groups)

Row 6-9: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st and across. Finish off B after Row 9. (26 sc)

Row 10: Repeat Row 5 with color C.

Row 11- 14: Repeat Rows 6-9 with color C. Finish off C after Row 14.

Row 15: Repeat Row 5 with color A.

Row 16-19: Repeat Rows 6-9 with color A. Do NOT finish off after Row 19 instead continue on to edging.

Edging:

Still working with color A, ch 1, turn 90° so you are working on the side and sc across side, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, now working on unused side of beg ch sc across putting (sc, ch 1, sc) in the corner, sc up the other side, (sc, ch 1, sc) in the corner, working across Row 19 of flap sc in next 12, ch 6 leaving ch unworked as this is the button loop, sc in next 12 putting (sc, ch 1, sc) in the corner, sl st in 1st st. Finish off leaving a long tail for attaching to case.

Strap:

Ch 51 leaving a long tail for attaching to case.

Rnd 1: 2sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 48, 5 sc in last ch, continuing on unused side of beg ch sc in next 48, 3sc in same ch as 1st 2sc, join with sl st in 1st sc. Finish off leaving a long tail for attaching to case. (106 sc)

Assembly:

Whip stitch flap to case along Row 19 between st 40 and 66. Sew straps to case on both sides of flap with 2 st between flap and strap. Weave in ends. Attach button to case behind where button loop meets case.

Front and back (make 2):

First 12 rows are worked in Rnds. Place a marker in first stitch of each row.

Ch 37

Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 34 st, 2sc in last ch, now working in unused loops in beg ch sc in next 34 st and last ch. This is the right side. (72 sc)

Rnd 2-12: sc in 1st st and around. (72 sc)

The rest of this part of pattern is worked in rows.

Row 13: ch 1, turn, sc dec in 1st two st, sc in next 32 st, sc dec in next 2 st leaving the rest of the st unworked. (2 sc dec, 32 sc)

Row 14-27: ch 1, turn, sc in 1st and next 33 st. (34 sc)

Do as many rows as you need to cover your book. The book I used only required 27 rows.

Finish off and weave in ends on 1st piece only.

Assembly of front and back:

Once 2nd piece is completed put both pieces together with right sides together. Sl st the 2 pieces together along row 27. Do NOT finish off if you are making the attached bookmark.
Bookmark:

Continuing from the assembly, ch 61. This is the top.

3sc in 2nd ch from hook, 4dc in each of the next 14 ch, 3sc in next ch, sl st in each of the next 45 ch, sl st to cover. Finish off, weave in ends.

Button closure:

Ch 17

Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 15 ch, ch 4 (leave these unworked for now), now working in unused loops from beg ch sc in next 16 ch, join with sl st to 1st sc. (32 sc, 4 ch)

Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in joining and next 15 st, 4 sc in ch 4 loop, sc in next 16 st and joining st from Rnd 1, finish off leaving long tail for attaching, weave in beg tail. (37 sc)

Attaching button and closure:

Whip stitch closure in place starting at row 6 of BACK (with cover laid out, bookmark will be at top and back will be on the right side of bookmark) and centered vertically. Make sure you do not sew closure to both sides of the Rnds.

Attach button between rows 5 and 6 of FRONT (with cover laid out flat, bookmark will be at top and front will be on the right) and centered vertically.

Strap:

Ch 151(or whatever length you choose); sc in 2nd ch from hook and down entire ch. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Drawsting:

Ch 121; sc in 2nd ch from hook and down entire ch. Finish off. Weave in ends.

To attach strap and drawstring: insert into 30th ch 1 space of Rnd 29 and weave all the way around. Thread both ends of drawstring into bead and knot each end. If you don’t use a bead just tie the drawstring into a bow. Attach one end of strap at 15th sc of Rnd 30 and other end at 45th sc of Rnd 30. Weave in ends.

Kitty Tote

I made this for my friend Toni as a Christmas present. Its a variation on the kittens in a row afghan. Enjoy!

(2.5 oz of color A, 1.5 oz of colors B and C)

5” store bought purse handles (round or D shaped)

Note about Rnd 25: This Rnd is done to even out the waves. You will basically be putting dc in top of the 8 stand-alone dc, dc in top of puffs and (dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc) across the shells.

Rnd 26-27: ch 1, sc in joining and around, join with sl st in 1st sc, finish off, weave in end. (90 sc)

Handle tabs:

First tab: Join color A with a sl st in 14th st from where you finished off.

Row 1: ch 1, sc in joining and next 18 st. (19 sc)

Row 2-5: ch 1, turn, sc across. Finish off at the end of Row 5 leaving a long tail for sewing. (19 sc)

Note: Make sure 5 rows are enough to cover your handles. You may have to do more depending on the type of handles you have.

Second tab: Join color A with a sl st in 27th st from where you finished off first tab.

Row 1-5: repeat Rows 1-5 from first tab. See note above from first tab.

Finishing:

Place handle on inside of first tab and fold tab toward inside of tote. Using tail from tab, sew tab to inside of tote to Rnd 26. Repeat on other side for second handle.

Weave in all ends.
